Four of us dashed down to Chicago for the first ever C²E² at McCormick Place this past Friday. The morning was for professionals only, so it was a little more low key, with limited speakers, exhibitors and crowds.
There was still plenty to take in, though, and Rhonda and I found ourselves wishing we had planned to do the whole weekend, as the lineup looked spectacular. Hopefully next year will be just as enticing and will feature more local panel speakers.
The back of the exhibit hall had a section devoted to artists, so students or people who were self publishing (or wanted to just sell their pieces) could get a section of table. The rest of the exhibits were dedicated to bigger publishers, comic book sellers, memorabilia (I really wanted a Totoro bag...) and a few odds and ends of folks, like ALA. We were a little disappointed at the minimal free swag, but understood it was an expo, open to the public later and was similar to an art show.
Rhonda and I sat in on two sessions: Connecting Boys with Books and Getting Graphic in Your Library. Each had a few things that sparked ideas that we could bring home or attempt to adapt for our use, particularly from the second presentation. Overall, the concept of the expo is promising and I hope to see it continue, with more librarians in attendance!
